  • Marana High School: graduated Class of 1993

My journey with Marana Unified School District began long before I ever set foot in a classroom as an employee. I started kindergarten at Marana Elementary in 1980 and moved to Roadrunner Elementary in 1983, becoming part of the very first class when the school opened. I continued on to Marana Junior High and graduated from Marana High School in 1993.

Some of my fondest memories come from my high school years, preparing floats for football games and cheering on our teams as a “Mat Maid” for wrestling. Those traditions brought students together in ways that feel rare today, creating moments of connection and pride that I will always treasure. School back then looked very different. We didn’t have cell phones or Chromebooks, and we learned to read and write in cursive. It was simpler, yet it felt like a close-knit, family-oriented community where everyone knew each other.

My professional journey began in 1996, when I started working at Roadrunner Elementary. My mom, Sally Pargas, had worked there for many years as an aide and later as an attendance clerk. She taught me something I carry with me every day: “Always treat everyone the same. You never know what a person might be going through, and your smile or hug might just get them through their day.” I’ve witnessed this truth countless times in my own work, and it has shaped how I interact with students, families, and colleagues. People still recognize and greet my mom wherever she goes, it’s amazing to see the lasting impact she has had on generations of students.

After some time away, I returned to MUSD in 2010 at Marana High School, stepped away to have my son, and then returned in 2018, where I’ve been ever since. Over the years, I’ve served in various roles, from Migrant Specialist and Native American Education Program Specialist to my current role as a social worker in Student and Family Support Services. I support McKinney-Vento students, families, and students in group homes, working to provide the same care and support that made a difference in my own life.

Looking back, MUSD has been more than just a place to learn or work, it has been a community of growth, opportunity, and purpose. I am proud to continue serving students and families, helping them feel valued, supported, and seen, just as I was growing up.
